Blood Product Transfusion Reaction Symptoms

Let your care team know if your child has any symptoms of a blood product transfusion reaction.

Some children may need blood product transfusions. Watch for these symptoms. They may mean your child is having a reaction.

During the first 24 hours:

  • Fever and chills
  • Skin rash
  • Trouble breathing
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Feeling dizzy or fainting

For up to 2 weeks after the transfusion:

  • Red or brown urine
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Yellowing of the eyes
  • Little or no urination
  • New fever or chills
  • Easy bruising or bleeding

If your child develops any of these symptoms or other symptoms of concern after receiving a transfusion, call your care team immediately.
