Ring Stacker

The following activities can be done with the ring stacker given to your child in their Therapy to Go bag. You may do these activities at a table, on the floor, or on another flat surface.

  • Gross motor: reaching, sitting or standing balance
  • Visual awareness and tracking
  • Fine motor: grasping, coordination
  • Cognitive skills: problem solving, color identification
  • Communication: understanding directions

Reminders

  • Be patient with your child. Give them enough time to complete each activity.
  • Show your child how to do each activity before they do it themselves.
  • Help your child as needed.
  • Be sure that you give your child enough opportunities to complete the tasks.

Activities

Stack and unstack rings

  1. Place the ring stacker in front of your child.
  2. Have your child take the rings off the stack one at a time and place them next to the ring stacker.
  3. Have your child put the rings back on the ring stacker one at a time.

Reach for rings

  1. Place the rings just out of your child’s reach.
  2. Have your child lean forward and reach for the rings.
  3. Have your child lean forward and reach to hand the rings to you or place the rings on the ring stacker.

Roll rings

  1. Grab 1 ring off the ring stacker.
  2. On a flat surface, roll the ring to your child like a wheel on a car. Show excitement and surprise to promote your child’s engagement in the task.
  3. Have your child roll the ring back to you the same way.
  4. Continue to roll the rings back and forth as long as your child participates in the activity.

Peekaboo

  1. Hide a ring under a blanket.
  2. Take the blanket off the ring and show the rings to your child. Show excitement and surprise when exposing the ring.
  3. Encourage your child to try this task.

Hide and Seek

  1. Hide rings around the room.
  2. Encourage your child to find the rings.
  3. When your child finds a ring, have them put the ring on the ring stacker.

Pretend Play

  1. Pretend the rings are hats and put them on your head. Use words like “on mommy’s head” and “on daddy’s head.” Then, put the rings on your child’s head. Use words like “on the baby’s head.”
  2. Pretend the rings are microphones. Talk and sing into the ring. Then, have your child talk and sing into the ring.
