Puzzle

The following activities can be done with the puzzle given to your child in their Therapy to Go bag.

Targeted skills

  • Gross motor: reaching, sitting or standing balance
  • Visual motor and scanning
  • Fine motor: grasping, coordination
  • Cognition: shape identification, color identification, problem solving, turn taking, direction following

Reminders

  • Be patient with your child. Give them enough time to complete each activity.
  • Show your child how to complete each activity before they do it themselves.
  • Help your child as needed.
  • Praise and encourage your child throughout the activity.
  • Use words such as: “too big,” “turn around,” and “in and out.” Use specific words for color and shape.
  • Teach your child how to take turns. “It was my turn. Now it is your turn.”
  • Give your child steps to follow. For example, “put the red circle in.”

Activities

General play

Give your child a puzzle piece to hold.

Have your child bang 2 puzzle pieces together.

Completing the puzzle

  1. Place the puzzle in front of your child.
  2. Have your child take pieces out of the puzzle one at a time.
  3. Have your child put the pieces back where they go.
  4. Repeat this until your child has removed and placed all puzzle pieces in or until your child is done with the activity.

Hide and Seek

  1. Hide puzzle pieces around the room.
  2. Have your child find the puzzle pieces.
  3. When your child finds a piece, have them put it where it should go in the puzzle.
