From Families and Caregivers, Psychology and Mental Health, Immune thrombocytopenia
Sadie Wright’s family is extra careful to reduce risks for their child, who has immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). They talk about how they make sure she stays safe without limiting her fun.
One of the main ways they keep her safe is by thinking about activities that could cause harm. For example, they avoid gymnastics because tumbling could lead to falls and injuries. At the pool, they make sure to watch out for slippery surfaces where Sadie could hurt herself.
When Sadie was younger, she wore a helmet when playing at the playground to prevent head injuries. As she has grown older, they continue to have conversations with her about being mindful of her actions. While they rarely say “no” to activities, they always think through ways to keep her safe, balancing caution with allowing her to enjoy being a kid.
