What Is Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP)?

What's covered in this Video:

From Care Team, Blood Disorders, Surgery, ITP

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a blood disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys platelets, the blood cells that help stop bleeding. As a result, people with ITP have low platelet counts and may bruise or bleed more easily.

This video explains how ITP develops, its common signs and symptoms, including easy bruising, petechiae, nosebleeds, and bleeding, and how it is diagnosed. You’ll also learn about treatment options such as medications that reduce immune system activity or increase platelet production, platelet transfusions, and, in some cases, surgery to remove the spleen.

Watch this video to understand the basics of immune thrombocytopenia and explore more resources on the Together by St. Jude™ online resource to support your journey.
