What is pregabalin?

Pregabalin is a medicine that can help with pain caused by damaged nerves in your legs, arms, fingers, or toes. It is only available with a prescription.

Possible side effects

Symptoms of a serious reaction to pregabalin include blurred vision, hives, rash, blisters, shortness of breath, wheezing, muscle pain, or difficulty breathing. 

Not all patients who take pregabalin will have these side effects. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.

Tips for families

  • Before your child starts taking pregabalin, talk with your child’s care team about any other medicines they take, including vitamins.
  • Pregabalin can cause changes in your child’s mental health status. Reach out to your child’s care team if you notice these changes. 
  • Pregabalin may start at a lower dose with a gradual dosage increase.
  • Remember: Although pregabalin can help with pain, it does not cure nerve damage. 
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness and may increase the risk of falls.
  • Patients should not stop taking pregabalin without medical supervision.
  • If your child needs surgery—including dental surgery—let the care team in charge know your child is taking pregabalin.

Pregabalin at home:

  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness and may increase the risk of falls.
  • If your child misses a dose of pregabalin, be sure they take the dose as soon as they remember it unless it is almost time for the next dose. 
  • Store this medicine at room temperature
  • Extended-release capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. Do not crush or chew before swallowing.
  • Do not use the medicine past the expiration date
  • Follow instructions for safe storage and disposal
