About gabapentin

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant medicine that can help control seizures. This medicine can also reduce pain due to peripheral neuropathy or other nerve pain.

The dose of gabapentin will gradually be increased until the desired dose is reached. It can take several days for gabapentin to start working.

This medicine is available in regular and extended-release form. Follow dosing instructions carefully.

Possible side effects

  • Feeling sleepy
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Rash
  • Abdominal pain
  • Eye twitching

Not all patients who take gabapentin will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.

Tips for families

  • This medicine can cause dizziness and drowsiness and may increase the risk of falls.
  • Patients should not stop taking gabapentin without medical supervision.
  • Female patients of child-bearing age receiving gabapentin should talk to their doctor before becoming pregnant.
  • Patients should tell their doctor if they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Gabapentin at home:

  • Take medicine at the same time each day.
  • Tablets and capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of water. Do not crush or chew before swallowing.
  • The content of the capsule can be added to a small amount of food, juice, or flavored syrup just before taking.
  • Store tablets and capsules at room temperature.
  • For liquid gabapentin, use the measuring device that comes with the medicine.
  • Store liquid gabapentin in the refrigerator.
  • Give a missed dose as soon as possible. If it is within 4 hours of the next dose, skip the dose. Do not give 2 doses at the same time.
  • Do not use the medicine past the expiration date.
  • Follow instructions for safe storage and disposal.
