Amikacin is an antibiotic used to prevent or treat infections. It works to kill bacteria that cause infections.
Patients will have tests to monitor kidney function, fluids, and hearing (in at-risk patients). Amikacin dose changes may occur based on levels in the blood.
May be given as a liquid into a vein by IV
May be given as a liquid injected into a muscle
Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, hives, itching, chills, fever, headache, muscle ache, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the throat, swelling of the face or neck
Not all patients who take amikacin will experience these side effects. Common side effects are in bold, but there may be others. Please report all suspected side effects to your doctor or pharmacist.
