Betsy Fisher
Retired Educator
Betsy Fisher is a retired high school social studies teacher. She adopted her son, Marshal, when he was 13. Eight months later, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Over the next 4 years, he received treatment in Florida and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Marshal died in 2018 at age 17. Since then, Fisher has supported the communities that helped her. She helps to grow an adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer program at the University of Florida Health Shands Hospital and is involved in its Arts in Medicine program. At St. Jude, Fisher serves as a bereaved parent mentor, grief educator, and member of the Quality of Life Steering Council. She helps with events such as Days of Remembrance for newly bereaved families and uses her experience to support others and honor Marshal’s legacy.
